Tomb Stores and Opening the Store: Chen, Xu, Chou and Wei as Storage
The four earth stores, the difference between a store and a tomb, what clash, punishment and combination actually do, and how the cycles change a store's state.
Direct answer
Tomb stores (墓库) are the four Earthly Branches chen, xu, chou and wei, traditionally treated as places of storage and collection. Opening a store means releasing what is held inside through clash or punishment; closing means it is combined and held shut. A store is not inherently auspicious or inauspicious. The reading depends on what is stored, whether there is force to open it, and whether what emerges is a useful element or an unfavourable one.
01Definition: the four stores and their hidden stems
Chen, xu, chou and wei are called the four stores (四库). They are earth first: chen and xu are yang earth, chou and wei are yin earth. Each also hides other elements inside, so a store has both an earth nature and stored content. Treating a store as nothing more than a warehouse for one element ignores the direct effect its earth nature has on the rest of the chart.
The common hidden stems are wu, yi and gui in chen; wu, xin and ding in xu; ji, gui and xin in chou; and ji, ding and yi in wei. The main qi is always earth, while the other hidden stems are middle and residual qi. Whether a hidden stem surfaces in the Heavenly Stems and whether it has a root decides whether the stored content can be used directly. Hidden does not mean absent, but the conditions for using it are more numerous.
The usual five-element tomb correspondences are wood in wei, fire in xu, metal in chou and water in chen. Earth is sometimes said to lodge in all four stores, and different systems give it different placements. This is a traditional correspondence, and schools disagree about earth. Before discussing a wealth vault or an officer vault, confirm which set of correspondences the reading is using.
The four stores are also often mentioned together with symbolic stars such as the Canopy star. Symbolic stars are a separate system of signs and cannot replace the analysis of hidden stems and open or closed states. Inferring a personality or an event from a symbolic-star name alone is a second-order mapping. This article only discusses the stores as branch structures.
02Rules: the two faces of store and tomb
A store (库) is content kept for later use; a tomb (墓) is content sealed away. These are two states of the same branch. Traditionally, content that is useful but currently collected is called a store, while content that is collected and temporarily unusable is called a tomb. Whether a branch functions as one or the other depends on its relation to the Day Master, its strength, whether anything surfaces, and whether it is open or closed.
Four checks help decide. Is the stored content surfaced in a stem? Does it have a root? Does it hold the season? Has it been opened by clash or combination? Content that surfaces, has a root and is clashed open leans toward a store. Content that does not surface, has no root and is held by a combination leans toward a tomb. This is a tendency judgement, not an absolute classification, and it should not become a fixed label attached to a branch.
The earth nature of the store cannot be ignored. Chen, xu, chou and wei are earth before they are anything else; they can generate metal, control water, bear weight and block movement. Even when the stored content is not opened, the earth itself is still participating in generation and control. Discussing only the wealth hidden inside a store, without discussing the earth, produces a one-sided conclusion.
03Rules: the conditions for opening a store
Clash is the commonest way to open a store. Chen and xu clash, and chou and wei clash. The force of the clash depends on position, on the strength of the parties and on whether a combination is restraining it. An adjacent clash acts most directly and a separated one less so. If the store is held by a combination, the clash may fail to open it, or the combination may have to be released before the clash can work. A clash that is itself weak, or that is separated from the store by several pillars, may produce only noise rather than an opening.
Punishment is the other traditional opening route, with the chou-xu-wei three punishment as the representative case. Its force and its level of dispute are both greater than a clash. Some systems give it real weight, others treat it as background reference. Punishment can also bring friction and repetition rather than a smooth release, so seeing the three punishment does not mean the store has definitely opened.
Combination and opening have to be separated. The six combinations first bind two branches together. When a store is combined, the tendency is toward closing or fettering, though a combination that transforms or moves may change the store's state. Schools disagree about whether a combination can open a store at all, so the convention being used has to be stated.
After a store opens, three questions remain. Does the stored content surface? Can the Day Master carry it? Is what emerges a useful element or an unfavourable one? A clash that opens a store does not guarantee that anything is obtained; it may simply scatter what was collected. The conclusion has to land on a specific element and Ten God, not on the bare action of opening.
It also helps to distinguish an opening with output from an opening without output. Some stores are clashed and only the earth qi is stirred, while the stored content never surfaces. Some stores look closed, but their content already surfaces in a stem and has a root, so it can be used directly. Opening is a condition, not a result.
04Rules: stores in the cycles
A store has three common states: entering the store, being opened, and remaining sealed. A store that is closed in the natal chart and clashed open by a Major Cycle or annual luck is a common opening point. A store that is already open in the natal chart and then combined by the cycles may close again. The state changes with the cycles; it is not decided once for a lifetime. The same branch can be a working store at one stage and a sealed tomb at another, which is why a static label is rarely enough.
Opening a store through the cycles requires force. Is the clash strong enough? Is it restrained by another combination or clash? Is there a character ready to receive what comes out? Opening is not a one-off event and may repeat. This is exactly why timing can speak of windows but not of fixed events.
A weak Day Master sitting on a store in the day branch is a special form. The day branch is the immediate environment, and its hidden stems may serve as a root, or its heavy earth may press on the Day Master. Wet earth such as chen and chou differs from dry earth such as xu and wei, and the two cannot be lumped together. This judgement needs the month command, the surfaced stems and the carrying capacity of the whole chart.
The wet or dry quality of a store also affects what it can carry. Traditionally, chen and chou are wet and can generate metal while obscuring fire; xu and wei are dry and can control water while making metal brittle. These qualities have to be read together with the hidden stems when deciding whether the stored content can be used. Counting hidden stems alone is not enough.
05Common misreadings: do not pronounce on a store too quickly
The first misreading is that a store always brings misfortune. A store is a state of collection, not an ominous character. If it holds a useful god and can be opened, it may be a resource; if it holds an unfavourable god and is opened, caution is reasonable. Seeing chen, xu, chou or wei is not a licence to pronounce, and a store should never be equated directly with illness or disaster.
The second is that a store means wealth. Wealth being stored only says that wealth is collected. Whether it can be obtained depends on the conditions for opening, the strength of the wealth and the carrying capacity of the Day Master. Translating a wealth vault directly into rich or poor is an oversimplification in both directions.
The third is to ignore the earth main qi. The four stores are earth first, and earth generates and controls the other elements. Staring only at the content misses the earth's effect on the whole chart. In a chart with abundant earth, the earth nature of the store may deserve attention before the stored content does. In such charts the store's weight and dryness may matter more than the name of what it hides.
The fourth is to treat entering a store as good and opening it as bad, or the reverse. Entering and leaving are state changes. The outcome depends on what emerges and whether it can be used. A state word cannot stand in for a conclusion; the analysis has to return to the elements and the Ten Gods.
The fifth is to look at the clash without looking at its force. Opening requires force and also requires that no combination is restraining it. A clash that fails to open, or an opening that closes again, is common. Counting whether a clash exists without weighing its strength distorts the reading.
The sixth is to connect tomb stores directly to health or lifespan. A tomb store is a structural term, not a statement about the body. Any assertion about illness or lifespan exceeds the framework and the boundaries of this site.
06Translation into modern life: reserves and sealing
Tomb stores can be translated as reserves and sealing. A store is like a warehouse, savings, accumulated skill or a dormant project; opening it is like deploying a reserve; closing it is like putting something back into storage. The analogy helps explain a state where resources exist but are not being used, rather than turning a branch into an auspicious or inauspicious symbol.
In practice, ask what resources are being held, including abilities, relationships and savings. Ask why they are not activated: are the conditions insufficient, is something else holding them in place, or has the timing not arrived? Then ask what conditions would open the store, such as a new cooperation, a change of stage or an external trigger. These are structural metaphors, not proof of real-world causality.
The lens can also support a review. A stage in which resources clearly exist but cannot be used may look like a store that has not opened; a stage in which they suddenly become usable may look like a cycle or a real condition opening it. Concrete action still has to rest on real information and professional advice.
07Boundary statement: a structural term, not a health or wealth verdict
Judging a tomb store involves hidden-stem tables, earth qualities, the conditions for clash, punishment and combination, and a good deal of disagreement between schools. The same chart may be judged a store in one system and a tomb in another. This article explains the common rules; it does not claim a single correct answer.
Chart casting on this site is done by a deterministic algorithm, and the AI only reads the structured result. It does not calculate the stems, branches, hidden stems or Major Cycles. Store and open-close judgements belong to the interpretive layer and must be traceable to specific branches and interactions. Untraceable judgements are not emitted.
Tomb-store analysis does not promise to predict specific events and is not used for health diagnosis, investment decisions, legal judgement or personal-safety assertions. For those areas, consult a qualified professional. The tradition is a cultural reference framework, not a modern scientific conclusion.
08Checklist
- The earth main qi of the four stores was read before the stored content
- A tendency toward store or tomb was distinguished, not decided from the branch name alone
- The opening conditions were checked for clash, punishment, combination and relative force
- After opening, the analysis checked whether the content surfaces and whether the Day Master can carry it
- When the cycles open or close a store, the result is described as a window rather than a fixed event
- Tomb stores were not used for health, lifespan or investment judgements
Frequently Asked Questions
Are chen, xu, chou and wei all stores?
Traditionally they are called the four stores, but they are earth first and each hides different stems. Whether one acts as a store or a tomb depends on its content and on the conditions for opening and closing.
Does opening a store always require a clash?
No. Clash is the commonest route, but punishment and, under certain conditions, combination can also change a store's state. Schools differ on the details.
Does wealth in a store mean the person is rich?
No. Wealth being stored only says that wealth is collected. Whether it is obtainable depends on the conditions for opening, the strength of the wealth and the carrying capacity of the Day Master.
If a store is combined shut, can it never open?
It can. A later clash or the release of the combination can change the state. A closed store is a stage, not a permanent seal.
Is there a connection between tomb stores and health?
This site does not use tomb stores for health judgements. A tomb store is a structural term; for medical questions, consult a healthcare professional.
What should a weak Day Master sitting on a store do?
There is no general answer. It depends on whether the hidden stems can serve as a root, whether the earth presses on the Day Master, and on the month command and surfaced stems. The whole chart has to be read.
