Orthodox and Reverse Patterns: What Formed, Broken and Reverse Actually Mean
An orthodox pattern is not a good life and a reverse pattern is not a bad one. They describe how a pattern is established: forward and reverse use, formed and broken structures, rescue and counter-control.
Direct answer
An orthodox pattern (正局) usually means the pattern god is established in the ordinary way, with protection or a companion god supporting it. A reverse pattern (反局) means the pattern god is controlled, combined away, or that the structure runs against the ordinary route yet still finds another way to stand under specific conditions. Both are structural judgements, not verdicts on fortune. The key questions are whether the pattern god has force, whether a rescue is present, and whether the Day Master can carry the result.
01Definition: orthodox, reverse, formed and broken
Pattern analysis (格局) asks which kind of functional relationship dominates the whole chart, starting from the month command. Once the pattern god is identified, the next questions are whether it is protected, whether a companion god supports it, and whether it has been damaged by clash or combination. An orthodox pattern describes the state in which this structure stands up in the expected way.
Reverse pattern is not used consistently across systems. Some call it reverse when the pattern god is controlled or combined away, which amounts to a broken pattern; others call it reverse when a structure such as Seven Killings with control, or Hurting Officer paired with Resource, is established through an apparently opposite route. The definition has to be stated before the discussion starts, or the same word will refer to two different things.
Formed and broken are another pair. A formed pattern means the pattern god has protection and a companion god, so the structure can function steadily. A broken pattern means the pattern god has been clashed, combined away or controlled, or that the necessary support is missing. Broken is a factual description, not a verdict. A broken pattern with a rescue and one without a rescue do not lead to the same conclusion.
02Rules: the conditions for an orthodox pattern
The first step in an orthodox pattern is to take the pattern. The traditional method starts from the month command and asks which of the month branch's hidden stems surfaces in the Heavenly Stems; the surfaced one defines the pattern. If none surfaces, the main qi of the month branch is taken, or the order in which the month's hidden stems take charge is consulted. There are several conventions for taking a pattern, and the same chart can be assigned different patterns in different systems. That is not a calculation error.
Once the pattern god is fixed, three things are checked: whether it has a root in the branches, whether it surfaces in the stems, and whether it holds the month command. A surfaced but rootless pattern god has limited force; a hidden but rooted one has an influence that is less visible yet persistent; a pattern god that holds the season is usually more stable, but it still has to be checked for clash or combination. Treating the pattern name as the conclusion makes the orthodoxy nominal only.
An orthodox pattern also requires the companion god to be in place. Patterns traditionally called auspicious, such as wealth, officer, Resource and output, tend to be completed through protection. Wealth needs an output source or an officer star to protect it; officer needs Resource to transform it or wealth to generate it; Resource needs officer and killing to generate it; output needs wealth to receive it. Patterns traditionally called inauspicious, such as killing, Hurting Officer, the owl and the blade, tend to be constrained through control and transformation. Seven Killings needs Eating God or Resource; Hurting Officer needs Resource or wealth; the owl needs control; the blade needs officer and killing. These are traditional labels, not forecasts of outcome.
Finally comes the Day Master's carrying capacity. Even a complete pattern can only look established if the Day Master has the strength to carry it. An orthodox pattern is not a synonym for a good life. It says that this type of structure stands in the ordinary way; what theme it brings still depends on the function of the Ten Gods and on real conditions.
03Rules: the two common meanings of reverse pattern
The first meaning is establishment through reverse use. Seven Killings represent pressure, but with Eating God controlling them or Resource transforming them, the pressure becomes executive capacity. Hurting Officer clashes with the officer star, but paired with Resource, expression is brought inside the rules. The owl seizes food, but when controlled by wealth, absorption and output are rebalanced. The blade is fierce, but constrained by officer and killing, its force is directed toward an external goal. The common pattern is that the conflict is acknowledged first and then converted into drive.
The second meaning is the reversal of a broken pattern. The pattern god is clashed, combined away or controlled, which would normally be a broken pattern. But if the chart contains a rescue, such as effective control and transformation, a strong bridge, or a cycle that supplies what is missing, the structure may turn from broken into another route. This reversal is not automatic. The rescue has to be rooted, strong and actually able to catch the damaged part rather than existing in name only.
At least four things have to be checked before calling a reverse pattern established: whether the conflicting side really constitutes a problem, whether the controlling or transforming side has force, whether the Day Master can carry the result, and whether the rescue has been interrupted by combination or clash. If one is missing, the so-called reverse formation may simply be a broken pattern with a more flattering name. Tradition does speak of reverse patterns becoming noble, but the conditions are strict and not every clash or control qualifies.
04Judgement steps: establish the pattern, then success, then rescue
First verify the four pillars and the calendar, so the chart itself is not wrong. Second take the pattern from the month command and record whether the method used was a surfaced hidden stem, the main qi, or another convention. Third mark the pattern god, the companion god and any possible rescue, writing down their roots, surfacing and positions.
Fourth check the breaking factors: has the pattern god been clashed, combined away or controlled, has the companion god been damaged, and is the structure missing a necessary support? Fifth check the rescue: is the controlling or transforming force rooted, is the bridge open, and can the Day Master carry the result? Sixth overlay the Major Cycles and annual luck to see whether the original orthodox or reverse structure is strengthened, weakened or rewritten at each stage.
Seventh, separate the conclusions. State whether this is an orthodox pattern, a reverse pattern or a broken pattern; how far it is established; which stems and branches provide the evidence; and where schools would disagree. A checkable sentence reads like this: the pattern god surfaces with a root and the companion god has qi in the month command, but the day branch is clashed and the rescue is weak, so the structure stands with limited stability. It does not read: the pattern is formed, therefore the life is good.
The distinction between pattern and luck has to be kept. The natal chart sets the base structure, while the Major Cycles and annual luck decide whether that structure has an environment at a given stage. An orthodox pattern can fail to express itself under an unsupportive cycle, and a broken pattern can temporarily form when a cycle supplies what is missing. Mixing pattern and luck into one sentence makes the conclusion far more certain than the method allows.
05Common misreadings: six places where the reading slips
The first misreading is to treat orthodox as a good life and reverse as a bad one. Orthodox only says the structure stands in the ordinary way; reverse only says it took another route. Either can have force or lack it, and either can change under different cycles. Fortune depends on what problem the structure solves, not on which label it carries.
The second is to treat a broken pattern as misfortune. A broken pattern describes damage to the structure, but the decisive question is whether a rescue exists and whether that rescue has force. Broken with rescue and broken without rescue are two different structures. Looking only at the word broken misses the second half of the analysis.
The third is to use reverse pattern as a universal explanation. Reverse formation has strict conditions. Not every clash, control or constraint qualifies. Explaining every conflict as a reverse pattern turns judgement into a story told after the fact.
The fourth is to memorise pattern names without checking the month command and surfaced stems. The name is derived from the month command and its hidden stems. When nothing surfaces, the choice between main qi and residual qi is itself a convention. Skipping the derivation and reciting the name makes the conclusion impossible to check.
The fifth is to ignore the Day Master's carrying capacity. A complete pattern with a Day Master that cannot carry it remains on paper. Conversely, a strong Day Master with a damaged pattern has no stable outlet for its force. Pattern and support and restraint answer two different questions and cannot replace each other.
The sixth is to set pattern and support and restraint against each other. In practice both are usually read: pattern asks whether the structural type stands, support and restraint ask whether the Day Master can carry it. A chart can have a formed pattern with insufficient capacity, or ample capacity with a loose pattern. Choosing only one loses half the information.
06Translation into modern life: institutions, exceptions and repair
An orthodox pattern is like an institution running by its standard process: responsibilities are clear, interfaces are stable, and there is an established way to handle problems. A reverse pattern is more like finding an exception path outside the standard process: the conflict is acknowledged, then converted into drive through control, negotiation or an alternative. A broken pattern is a rupture in the process, and a rescue is the backup mechanism that fills the gap.
In practice, ask four questions. What is the main structure I currently depend on? Does it have stable supporters and companions? Where is it most easily broken? And if it breaks, is there an alternative path? These four questions are closer to the actionable layer than the question of whether my pattern is formed.
The lens can also support a review. A stage that goes smoothly may be an orthodox pattern supported by the cycles; a sudden blockage may be the pattern god clashed or the companion god failing; a later reopening may be a rescue appearing. This is a structural metaphor, not proof of real-world causality, and it cannot replace an organizational diagnosis or professional advice.
07Boundary statement: structural language, not a destiny verdict
The method of taking a pattern, forward and reverse use, the threshold for formed and broken, and the recognition of follower and reverse structures all differ between schools. This article explains common rules and a judgement order; it does not claim that one system is the only correct answer. On a borderline chart, stating the convention is more important than producing a definite name.
Chart casting on this site is done by a deterministic algorithm, and the AI only turns the structured result into explanation. It does not calculate the four pillars, hidden stems or Major Cycles. Pattern judgements belong to the interpretive layer and must be traceable to specific stems, branches and interactions. Conclusions that cannot be traced are not emitted.
Pattern analysis does not promise to predict specific events and is not used for health diagnosis, investment decisions, legal judgement or personal-safety assertions. For those areas, consult the appropriate professional. The tradition is a cultural reference framework, not a modern scientific conclusion, and it should not be the sole basis for a major decision.
08Checklist
- The pattern was taken from the month command, and the method used when no hidden stem surfaces was stated
- Pattern god, companion god and rescue were marked out, not merely the pattern name
- The pattern god was checked for clash, combination and control damage
- Orthodox pattern, reverse pattern and broken pattern were kept distinct
- The strength of control and transformation, and the Day Master's carrying capacity, were checked before calling a reverse pattern established
- The conclusions separate the natal structure from the environment supplied by the cycles
Frequently Asked Questions
Is an orthodox pattern always better than a reverse pattern?
No. Orthodox and reverse describe how a structure is established, not whether it is fortunate. Either can have force or lack it, and either can be rewritten by the cycles.
Are reverse pattern and broken pattern the same?
Not exactly. Some systems call a broken pattern reverse, while others use reverse for a structure established through an opposite route. The definition in use has to be stated.
If a broken pattern has a rescue, is it automatically formed?
No. The rescue has to be rooted, strong and able to catch the damaged part. A rescue that exists in name only does not restore the structure.
Which comes first, pattern or Day Master strength?
They answer different questions. Pattern asks whether the structural type stands; support and restraint ask whether the Day Master can carry it. In practice both are read rather than choosing one.
Is a follower pattern orthodox or reverse?
Follower patterns are special structures and are usually not placed inside the orthodox-reverse pair. Their threshold is high and schools disagree strongly about them.
Why do teachers disagree about whether a pattern is orthodox or reverse?
Common reasons are different conventions for taking the pattern, different rules for forward and reverse use, and different thresholds for formed patterns. It is a difference of framework, not a simple calculation error.
Can a pattern show a career directly?
No. A pattern describes a structural type. A career also depends on skills, industry, opportunity and personal choice.
