Advanced Ten Gods: Combinations, Position and Priority, Not an Encyclopedia
Move past the ten definitions: read the generation-and-control chains between Ten Gods, the palace context and the difference between surfaced and hidden stems, and see why combinations like Eating God controlling Seven Killings cannot be judged from their names.
Direct answer
Advanced Ten Gods work is not a second memorisation of the ten names. It reads how the Ten Gods combine inside one chart, where they sit and how their forces compare. The same Ten God can perform opposite functions in different combinations, so the usual order is to establish the Day Master's carrying capacity first, then trace who generates or controls whom, and only then discuss what the combination means for a specific theme. The name is a classification of relationship, not a verdict.
01Definition: from which Ten Gods are present to what they are doing
Beginners usually learn the Ten Gods by name: Bi Jian, Jie Cai, Shi Shen, Shang Guan, Zheng Cai, Pian Cai, Zheng Guan, Qi Sha, Zheng Yin and Pian Yin. The advanced question is different. What function does each name represent, and how do those functions pull on one another inside the same chart? The name answers what kind of relationship exists; the combination answers what that force is actually doing.
The same Direct Officer can look like a sense of rules and a position when it surfaces on the month stem, is transformed by Resource, and the Day Master can carry it. It can look like nothing but external pressure when it sits on the year stem, has no root, and is pressed by an adjacent Hurting Officer. The difference is not in the name. It lies in position, surfacing, root strength and adjacency. Treating a Ten God as a personality label mistakes a category for a conclusion.
Priority is the core of advanced work. The checkable order is usually: confirm whether the Day Master can carry the chart; then see which Ten Gods are established as leading forces by the month command and the surfaced stems; then check whether the generation-and-control chains between them are interrupted by combination or clash; and only then apply the result to career, wealth or relationships. Reverse the order and the conclusion turns into free association on names.
02Rules: read the generation-and-control chain before the name
A Ten God combination is essentially a chain of generation and control. Eating God controlling Seven Killings requires that the Seven Killings genuinely constitute pressure, that the Eating God has roots and force, and that the two can act on each other. If the Seven Killings are already weak and are then controlled again, the structure may lose balance instead of gaining it. Hurting Officer meeting Direct Officer is not automatically unfavourable either: when the officer star is excessively strong and needs an outlet, the collision may be the way out; when the officer star is a structural support, the collision can cause real damage.
Output generating wealth is judged by whether the path is complete: the Day Master must be able to generate output, output must be able to generate wealth, and wealth must be something the Day Master can receive. If any segment has no root, is combined away or is clashed, the path exists in name only. Officer generating Resource follows the same logic: officer generates resource, resource returns to support the Day Master. If Resource is so strong that it drains the officer dry, or the Day Master does not need Resource, the chain becomes congestion rather than transformation.
At least four things have to be checked before saying a combination is active: both sides have force, they are adjacent, they are not interrupted by combination, clash, punishment or harm, and the Day Master can carry the result. Only when all four hold is it meaningful to say the combination is doing something. Seeing two Ten Gods in the same chart is not a formula for a conclusion.
There is also a hierarchy of priority. A Ten God surfaced from the month command is usually more direct than one hidden in a branch; a position adjacent to the Day Master is usually more direct than a separated one; a rooted Ten God is usually more stable than a rootless one; and a Ten God changed by combination or clash should be read in its post-change state. Putting these rules together is how you work out which character speaks loudest in a particular chart.
03Rules: palace and surfacing change what the same Ten God means
Palaces give the Ten Gods their context. The year pillar leans toward early environment and external relationships; the month pillar toward upbringing, career and social role; the day branch is the position closest to the Day Master; the hour pillar leans toward later output and closure. The same Direct Wealth in the month command, the day branch or the hour pillar raises different themes: the month command reads more like the main resource environment, the day branch more like intimate relationships and daily life, and the hour pillar more like later results and arrangements.
Surfaced and hidden stems offer two kinds of visibility. A Ten God surfaced in the Heavenly Stems is easier to observe directly, but if it has no root its force is still limited. A hidden Ten God is less conspicuous, yet because it may have a root and hold the season it can keep working over time. Counting only the Ten Gods on the stems leaves out a large part of the structure; counting only hidden stems overestimates what cannot be seen.
The mapping from Ten Gods to the six relations is another layer. Traditionally a male chart takes wealth as the wife star and a female chart takes officer and killing as the husband star; Resource is often mapped to the mother, and so on. These are conventions inside a traditional framework, not a complete description of modern family relationships. A palace is a position, a Ten God is a function, and a six relation is a relationship; all three have to be read together rather than using one name to define a person.
04Judgement steps: a reading order for the Ten Gods in one chart
First verify the four pillars and the calendar, so the Day Master and the Ten Gods mapping have not been cast incorrectly. Second judge the Day Master's strength and carrying capacity, because the same Ten God leads to opposite conclusions depending on whether the chart can carry it. Third read the month command and the surfaced stems to establish which Ten Gods are leading forces in the current structure and which are only background.
Fourth, list the surfaced and hidden Ten Gods separately and mark their roots and positions. Fifth, draw the chains: who generates whom, who controls whom, who is combined by whom, and which chains are clashed open or interrupted. Sixth, return to the specific theme and state it in a structure-plus-condition sentence. For example: the wealth star surfaces with a root, output has qi in the month command, and the conversion path is established, but the Day Master is on the weak side and can only carry part of it. That is very different from saying wealth is strong, therefore the person is rich.
Seventh, check whether the Major Cycles and annual luck change the original combination. The natal combination is the base layer. The cycles bring new characters into the chain and can also break the old chain. Ten God analysis without the cycles can explain static structure but cannot explain how a stage changes.
Finally, label the confidence level of each conclusion: which statements are charting facts, which are structural judgements, and which are only thematic tendencies. Facts can be verified, judgements must state their evidence, and tendencies must allow counterexamples. If the three layers are mixed together, the reader cannot tell how far any sentence can be trusted.
05Common misreadings: six places where the reading slips
The first misreading is to judge from the name. Seven Killings, Hurting Officer and Jie Cai carry an ominous tone from traditional wording, but the name is not the conclusion. With control, transformation and carrying capacity they can show up as drive, expression and competitiveness. Conversely, names that sound gentle, such as Direct Officer or Direct Resource, can become pressure and dependence when they are excessive or badly placed.
The second is to treat a combination as a formula. Eating God controlling Seven Killings is not established merely because both appear, and Hurting Officer meeting Direct Officer is not automatically bad. A combination has to be read for the balance of force, adjacency, interruption and the Day Master's capacity. Formula reading collapses on borderline charts.
The third is to ignore position and distance. Two Ten Gods separated by a pillar act less directly than two adjacent ones. A Ten God on the year pillar and the same Ten God on the day branch raise different themes even when the name is identical. Reading names without positions compresses a chart into a list.
The fourth is to count only surfaced stems. Surfaced Ten Gods are easy to see, but hidden stems participate in the structure as well. A hidden Ten God with a root can be stronger than a surfaced one without a root. The counting convention has to be stated, not chosen for whatever looks better.
The fifth is to map Ten Gods directly onto a career, an income level or a spouse. Ten Gods describe relationship functions. A career also depends on skills, industry and opportunity; income depends on real distribution; a spouse depends on an actual person and mutual choice. These direct mappings are second-order inferences, not conclusions of the tradition itself.
The sixth is to ignore the cycles. A natal combination is activated, suppressed or rewritten at different stages. Using one natal picture to explain every year easily mistakes a stage change for a permanent trait.
06Translation into modern life: roles, interfaces and priority
In modern language the Ten Gods can be read as a role-and-interface map. Peers are peers and competitors; output is skill, expression and production; wealth is income, assets and disposable results; officer and killing are institutions, responsibility and external demands; Resource is learning, credentials and support systems.
Combinations are the interfaces. Output generating wealth is the interface that turns ability into value. Officer generating Resource is the interface that turns rules into support. Peers robbing wealth is the interface where competition takes a share of resources. Resource controlling output is the interface where a support system presses down on production. Whether an interface is open matters more than how strong any single role looks.
Priority translates into the question of which role is leading at the current stage. Different Major Cycles and years amplify different roles in the same person's chart. Seeing the priority explains why the same chart focuses on different themes at different times. This is a structural metaphor, not proof of real-world causality, and it cannot replace concrete career planning or financial decisions.
In practice, three questions help. What is my main mode of output right now? Is that output connected to resources and results? And is the middle blocked by competition, rules or a support system? These questions are closer to the actionable layer than the question of which Ten God pattern I am.
07Boundary statement: a classification, not a verdict
The mapping rules of the Ten Gods are relatively fixed, but the interpretation of combinations differs between schools. Some emphasise the month command and pattern, some emphasise surfaced stems and work, and some rank certain combinations as high priority while treating others as reference. This article describes a common structure of judgement; it does not claim to be the only reading.
Chart casting on this site is done by a deterministic algorithm. The AI only turns structured evidence into explanation and does not calculate the four pillars, hidden stems, Ten Gods or Major Cycles. Ten God combinations belong to the interpretive layer and must be traceable to specific stems, branches and interactions. Judgements that cannot be traced are not emitted.
Ten God analysis does not promise to predict specific events and is not used for health diagnosis, investment decisions, legal judgement or personal-safety assertions. For those areas, consult the appropriate professional. The tradition is a cultural reference framework, not a modern scientific conclusion, and it should not be the sole basis for a major decision.
08Checklist
- The Day Master's carrying capacity was established before the Ten God combination was judged
- Both sides of the combination were checked for force, adjacency and interruption by combination or clash
- Surfaced and hidden stems were kept distinct, rather than counting the stems only
- Palace, Ten God and six-relation mappings were not collapsed into one another
- Conclusions use a structure-plus-condition sentence rather than a verdict from the name
- The way the Major Cycles and annual luck rewrite the combination was stated
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between beginner and advanced Ten Gods work?
The beginner level memorises names and derivation rules; the advanced level reads combinations, position, surfacing and the balance of force. The same Ten God can behave in opposite ways in different structures.
Is Eating God controlling Seven Killings always good?
No. It depends on whether the Seven Killings really constitute pressure, whether the Eating God has roots and force, and whether the Day Master can carry the result. Controlling an already weak killing can go too far.
Is Hurting Officer meeting Direct Officer always bad?
No. When the officer star is excessively strong, Hurting Officer may provide the needed outlet. The collision becomes a problem when the officer star is a structural support.
Does the same Ten God mean the same thing on the year pillar and the day branch?
No. The year pillar leans toward early environment and the outside; the day branch leans toward the intimate environment and daily relationships. The palace supplies context, and the name only supplies the function.
Can a Ten God combination show a career directly?
No. A combination describes a function and a path. A career also depends on skills, industry, opportunity and personal choice.
Why do teachers emphasise different Ten Gods in the same chart?
Common reasons are different weights for the month command, different choices between surfaced and hidden stems, different combination priorities and different school frameworks. These are differences of convention, not necessarily calculation errors.
Should hidden-stem Ten Gods be read?
Yes. Hidden stems also form Ten God relationships with the Day Master. When rooted, a hidden Ten God can be stronger than a surfaced one without a root; it is simply less visible.
