What Is BaZi? The Basic Structure of Four Pillars Reading
Starting from the Four Pillars, Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches, Five Elements and the Day Master, what BaZi actually analyses — and how it is best used.
Direct answer
BaZi, also called the Four Pillars (四柱), turns the year, month, day and hour of birth into four pairs of characters — eight characters in all. A reading looks at how much power each of the Five Elements actually holds in its season, how well the Day Master (日主) can carry the chart, how the Ten Gods (十神) relate to one another, and how those structures are stirred by the Major Cycles (大运) and annual luck (流年). It is a traditional interpretive framework, not a deterministic prediction.
01Why the Four Pillars come to eight characters
Each pillar pairs one Heavenly Stem (天干) with one Earthly Branch (地支), and there is one pillar for the year, month, day and hour — four pillars, eight characters. The stems describe the outward, more visible layer; the branches describe the layer that carries and roots it. The two have to be read together.
02BaZi reads relationships, not counts
How often an element appears is only a distribution across the chart; it is not strength by itself. The same element behaves very differently depending on the season, its position, whether it surfaces in a stem, and whether it has a root. Two charts with identical element counts can have completely different structures.
03The Day Master is the reference point, not a full personality
The Day Master is the stem of the day pillar. The Ten Gods and the strength assessment are both calculated from it. But it is only the origin of the coordinates: character, career and relationships still depend on the whole configuration and on the cycles of later years. One character cannot settle the question.
04The natal chart and the cycles of time are two layers
The natal chart is the static structure fixed at the moment of birth. The Major Cycles and annual luck layer time on top of it. The chart sets the baseline; the cycles decide which forces are amplified or suppressed at a given stage. Neither replaces the other.
05A judgement order you can re-check
The usual order is: verify the birth time and the calendar boundaries; then read the month branch's seasonal command (月令) together with the Day Master to establish strength; then check whether the Five Elements flow and whether anything is clearly out of balance; only then move on to the Ten Gods and to combinations, clashes, punishments and harms; and finally overlay the cycles and the specific question. The order matters because it stops you from pronouncing on the first term you recognise.
06What BaZi can and cannot offer
It is suited to describing structural tendencies, themes and pacing — for example, that a certain kind of relationship is more easily triggered, or that a particular stage calls for caution. It is not suited to giving dates for specific events, medical diagnoses, or firm instructions about investments or legal matters.
07Checklist
- The birth time was checked against the place of birth and the calendar boundaries, not taken straight from the clock
- The month command and the Day Master were read before the Ten Gods and symbolic stars; the order was not reversed
- Every conclusion can name its evidence: which stem or branch, which relationship, triggered the judgement
- Where schools differ, the convention being used is stated
- A missing element was not automatically treated as an element that must be added
Frequently Asked Questions
Are BaZi and the Chinese zodiac the same thing?
No. The zodiac uses only the year branch. BaZi uses all four pillars — year, month, day and hour — eight characters in total, which is a far larger body of information.
Can BaZi predict specific events accurately?
No. It is better suited to describing structural tendencies and the pacing of stages; specific events also depend on real-world conditions and personal choices.
Do I have to know my birth hour to read a chart?
Knowing the hour gives the highest precision. Without it you can read three pillars, but judgements about later life, children and the closing stage of a career become noticeably weaker.
Why do different sites produce different charts?
The usual causes are whether true solar time (真太阳时) is enabled, how the day changes at the zi hour, the precision of the solar term (节气) boundary, and different weights for hidden stems (藏干). These are convention differences; you can check them one by one, but you should not mix them.
What is the most certain part of BaZi?
The chart data. The four pillars, the hidden stems and the Ten Gods mapping can all be verified programmatically. School differences live in the interpretive layer.
Is BaZi a good basis for major decisions?
It can serve as a reference for self-observation. It should not be the sole basis for medical, legal or investment decisions.
