Zi Wei Dou Shu or Bazi: which one should you use?
They are not a short version and a long version of one system. Bazi slices by time (four pillars and ten gods); Zi Wei slices by life domain (twelve palaces). Which you want depends on what you are asking.
What you will be able to do
You can say how the two systems differ structurally, what each is good at answering, which one fits a given question, and what to do when they disagree.
What you need first
- A complete birth date and hour (both systems need it, and the hour matters most)
- Birthplace (both are affected by true solar time)
- A specific question — 'which is more accurate' has no answer; it has to land on something concrete
01Start with how each system slices the chart
Bazi slices the chart into **four time pillars**: year, month, day, hour. Analysis runs on generation and control, combination and clash between stems and branches, plus the ten-god relations. Its organising logic is time and relation.
Zi Wei Dou Shu slices the chart into **twelve palaces**: life, wealth, career, spouse, health and so on. Analysis runs on which palace each star falls in and which stars share or oppose it. Its organising logic is life domain.
That is the essential difference: one slices by time, one by domain. They are not a short and a long version of the same thing.
- 01Write the Bazi structure as 'year / month / day / hour pillars plus ten gods'
- 02Write the Zi Wei structure as 'twelve palaces plus star distribution'
- 03Decide which structure your question sits in more naturally
02What each is good at answering
Bazi is good at **projection along a timeline**: major luck cycles (大運), annual pillars (流年), what a given decade is about, when pressure builds. Its skeleton is time.
Zi Wei is good at **locating a domain**: which area of life this chart is strong in, which palace is structurally tense, which domain gets activated in a given period. Its skeleton is domains.
So 'what is this year like' leans on Bazi's timeline; 'is career or marriage the focus for me' leans on Zi Wei's domain mapping.
- 01Sort the question: is it 'when' or 'which domain'
- 02For 'when', start with Bazi; for 'which domain', start with Zi Wei
03When to use Bazi
When you need time to move: how the 大運 sequence is laid out, at what age it starts, how a given year relates to its 大運, what a period is about.
When you need the five elements and useful elements: day master strength, favourable and unfavourable elements, seasonal adjustment. These concepts belong to Bazi.
When you need stem-and-branch interaction between people: combinations, clashes, punishments, harms and the ten-god relations.
- 01List the time range you care about (which years, which 大運 step)
- 02Lay out the four pillars, the 大運 sequence and the annual pillars
- 03Land the conclusion on 'what is the structure of this period', not 'what will definitely happen'
04When to use Zi Wei
When you need domain strength: which palace has a good star structure, which one is tense.
When you need to know which domain a period activates: which palace the major limit and annual cycle fall into.
When the star distribution matters: some configurations depend on specific star combinations, which is Zi Wei's strength.
- 01List the domains you care about (career / money / relationships / health)
- 02Locate the matching palace on the Zi Wei chart and read its star structure
- 03Land the conclusion on 'what is the structure of this domain' — again, not an assertion
05What to do when the two disagree
Disagreement is common, because the two slice differently and can legitimately give different signals on different facets.
The answer is not to pick one, but to **read what each actually said**: if Bazi says a period carries pressure and Zi Wei says a domain is structurally tense, that may be one thing projected into two coordinate systems, or it may genuinely be two things.
Neither system should be used to deliver a certain conclusion. This material describes structure and tendency, not a list of events. Reading both makes the description more complete — not the conclusion more certain.
- 01Write both conclusions side by side; do not merge them yet
- 02Find where they might point at the same thing
- 03Keep the parts that disagree instead of forcing them into one conclusion
Common mistakes
- Asking which is more accurate
- There is no answer, because the two slice differently rather than being two precisions of one thing. The useful question is which one fits your particular question more naturally.
- Mixing the two systems
- Applying Bazi's useful-element concepts to Zi Wei palaces, or Zi Wei's configuration names to a Bazi chart, produces statements that belong to neither system and cannot be checked. Each has its own conceptual vocabulary; mixing them is the main source of error.
- Ignoring what the hour does to both
- Without an hour, Bazi has no hour pillar and Zi Wei cannot place the life palace. Both depend heavily on the hour, and the hour is the item people misremember most. If the birth time is uncertain, settle that first.
- Expecting the two to confirm each other into certainty
- Two systems pointing the same way makes a description more credible; it does not turn a tendency into an assertion. There is no reasoning of the form 'both said good, so it is certainly good'.
- Switching systems because one said something unwelcome
- Switching does not change the structure, it only finds you a reading you prefer. If a conclusion unsettles you, check the derivation — do not recompute with the other system.

Questions
Which is more accurate, Zi Wei Dou Shu or Bazi?
It is not a question of precision. Bazi slices by time (four pillars, ten gods); Zi Wei slices by life domain (twelve palaces). Different structures answer different kinds of question, and neither subsumes the other.
Which should a beginner learn first?
It depends which questions you want to answer. For projection over time (大運, 流年, starting age), begin with the four pillars and ten gods. For domain mapping (career, marriage, money), begin with the twelve palaces. Both need a complete birth hour.
If the two disagree, did one of them compute it wrong?
Not necessarily. They slice differently and may give different signals on different facets. Read what each said side by side, find where they may point at the same thing, and keep the disagreement rather than forcing a reconciliation.
Can I use Bazi alone and ignore Zi Wei entirely?
Yes. Bazi is a complete system covering projection over time and the five elements. Zi Wei is convenient for locating domains, but it is not required.
Does this site use both?
Both, but kept apart: Bazi in the life book and fortune modules, Zi Wei in its own module. We do not mix the concepts of the two systems in one reading — that is exactly where errors come from.
