BaZi compatibility vs a single chart: what each can answer
A single chart describes one person's structure and pacing. Compatibility reads how two charts move each other through their Day Masters, stems, branches and palaces. The right order is to cast each chart first, then compare the interaction, not to add two readings together.
Direct answer
A single chart describes one person's structure and pacing. Compatibility reads how two charts move each other through their Day Masters, stems, branches and palaces. It is not two readings added together: cast each chart first, then compare the cross-chart relationships and state the limits.
One reads structure, the other reads interaction
A single BaZi chart answers the question 'what is the structure of this chart?' Where is the elemental force biased, what theme does the Ten Gods combination form, how do the Major Cycles and annual luck stir the pacing of stages? The object of analysis is one person, and every judgement revolves around that one chart.
Compatibility answers a different question: what happens when two charts are placed together? The object shifts from one person to the relationship between two people. What matters is therefore not the sum of two individual conclusions but the cross-chart relationships: whether the Day Masters generate or control each other, whether the day branches combine or clash, whether the year branches harm each other, and whether the stems combine.
The order matters. Cast each chart first and confirm that the four pillars, hidden stems and Ten Gods of each are correct. Then mark the cross-chart relationships and see which layer they land on: Day Master, spouse palace, family palace. Only then discuss interaction tendencies. Skipping the first step and going straight to 'are we compatible' makes it easy to mistake a charting error for a relationship problem.
Compatibility is also not a verdict on the relationship. It describes attraction, tension, communication style and patterns that tend to repeat. It does not tell you whether you should stay together, and it certainly does not guarantee an outcome. Where a relationship goes depends on both people's choices, real conditions and how they treat each other; the chart offers one angle of observation.
Comparison table: a single chart vs BaZi compatibility
| Dimension | Single chart | BaZi compatibility |
|---|---|---|
| Object of analysis | One person's birth time | The relationship between two or more sets of birth information |
| Core mechanism | One's own Five Elements, Ten Gods, pattern and cycles | Cross-chart combinations, clashes, punishments and harms among Day Masters, day branches, year branches and other positions |
| Questions it can answer | My structure, stage pacing and relationship patterns | Attraction, tension and communication tendencies in the interaction |
| Questions it cannot answer | Specific events and other people's choices | Who loves whom more, or whether the relationship will last |
| Common misuse | Treating a tendency as a settled fact | Rejecting a relationship because the zodiac animals clash, or guaranteeing it because the day pillars combine |
| Requirement for the hour | A missing hour mainly costs the hour pillar | A missing hour on either side weakens the interaction judgement |
| Output priorities | Structural description and cycle pacing | Each chart first, then cross-chart relationships and limits |
More information in a compatibility reading does not equal more certainty. The more specific a relationship question is, the more it needs real communication and observation to verify.
How to verify: six steps for a compatibility reading you can check
Step one: cast both charts correctly.
Before thinking about the relationship, check each person's four pillars, hidden stems and Ten Gods separately: birthplace, time, true solar time and zi-hour convention. If either chart is wrong, the cross-chart relationships mean nothing. This step cannot be skipped.
Step two: mark the relationship type and the pillar it occupies.
The five stem combinations, six branch combinations, three combinations, six clashes, punishments and harms each land on a particular pillar: Day Master with Day Master, day branch with day branch, year branch with year branch. The type and the position carry different meanings. Writing only 'combines' or 'clashes' without the position is not an analysis.
Step three: separate the Day Master, spouse palace and family palace.
The Day Master relationship describes the basic tone of the interaction; the day-branch relationship describes how the two behave in intimate life; the year-branch relationship describes differences in family background and early environment. Mixing the three layers makes it easy to read a background difference as a conclusion about the relationship.
Step four: do not let one relationship decide everything.
One clash does not mean two people cannot get along, and one combination does not mean there is no conflict. Any single relationship is only part of the interaction map. Concluding from 'the zodiac animals clash' or 'the day pillars combine in both stem and branch' treats a part as the whole.
Step five: check the description against real interaction.
Compare the reading's account of communication style, conflict triggers and ways of supporting each other with how you actually relate. The parts that fit can serve as clues for understanding each other; for the parts that do not, check the charts and conventions first, then consider whether the reading has overreached.
Step six: be clear that it is not relationship counselling.
Compatibility cannot replace communication, counselling or safety judgement. If a relationship involves control, violence or sustained harm, no chart-based explanation should become a reason to stay. Seek real-world professional support first.
How we approach it
The relationship entry on this site requires at least two sets of birth information, casts each chart first and only then compares across them. It does not output a total compatibility score or a verdict. The specific practice is:
Cast first, compare second. Each participant's chart is cast from their own birth information, with the four pillars, hidden stems and Ten Gods calculated by a deterministic engine. Only then are cross-chart relationships such as Day Master, day branch and year branch handed to the interpretation. The order cannot be reversed.
Relationship types are listed by rule. The five stem combinations, six branch combinations, three combinations, six clashes, punishments and harms are determined by rules, not by free association in the model. The reading must state which pillar a relationship falls on and which layer of interaction it affects.
No score for the relationship. This site does not provide a 'compatibility score' or a verdict on whether two people should marry. Compatibility describes interaction tendencies and sources of tension; whether to stay or leave is decided by the people involved, based on real circumstances.
If the hour is uncertain, say so. If either person's hour is missing, hour-related judgements weaken. Day-branch relationships can still be read, but interaction descriptions that depend on the hour pillar should leave room. Candidate charts can be compared by editing the birth time and recasting; this site has no automatic hour detection.
No fear-based conclusions. We do not use phrases such as 'brings misfortune to the spouse', 'doomed to separate' or 'disaster' to push a decision, and we do not treat a zodiac clash as a verdict on the relationship. The value of compatibility is the angle of observation, not the fear it can create.
Multi-person scenarios are not several couple readings added together. The relationship entry supports scenarios with more than two people, but the precision of cross-chart comparison declines as the number grows. Compare pairs separately and then return to the whole conversation; do not summarise every interaction in one total score.
Limits and disclaimer
BaZi compatibility is a traditional framework for analysing relationships. It describes interaction tendencies and sources of tension; it does not predict how a relationship will end and does not decide for anyone whether to stay or leave. It does not provide medical diagnoses, disaster claims, investment or legal conclusions, and cannot replace communication, counselling or safety judgement. If there is violence, control or sustained harm, seek real-world professional support first.
Frequently asked questions
If our zodiac animals clash, can we not be together?
That inference does not hold. The zodiac uses only the year branch, and a year-branch clash is one item in the cross-chart picture. It does not cover the Day Master or day branch, and it does not consider how the two people actually relate. Rejecting a relationship on a zodiac clash alone treats a partial relationship as a whole verdict.
Can compatibility show who loves whom more?
No. The chart can describe tendencies in attraction, giving and tension, but 'who loves whom more' is a matter of feeling and choice, not something stems and branches can measure. Any claim to compare love precisely goes beyond the framework.
If the day pillars combine in both stem and branch, is that necessarily good?
Not necessarily. A stem-and-branch combination is a relationship often valued in intimate readings, but it is only part of the cross-chart picture. Other pillars' clashes, combinations, punishments and harms, and the reality of how the two relate, still matter. One good relationship does not mean the whole relationship is problem-free, and one bad one does not mean it cannot work.
If the compatibility result looks bad, is there any hope?
Translate 'bad' into specific relationships first: is communication easily misaligned, are conflict triggers concentrated, or is the family-background difference large? Specific problems can be addressed through communication and adjustment. If 'bad' is only a vague verdict, it offers no actionable information in itself.
Is marriage compatibility read the same way as business partnership compatibility?
The basic relationship types are the same, but the layers of concern differ. Marriage looks more at the day branch and intimate interaction; partnership looks more at Day Master interaction, resources and decision-making style. The same set of relationships carries different weight in different settings, and a marriage conclusion should not be applied directly to a partnership.
What if I know the other person's birthday but not the hour?
Cross-chart relationships at the year, month and day levels can still be read, but interaction judgements that depend on the hour pillar weaken. Record the missing hour as an uncertainty rather than filling it with a default. This site has no automatic hour detection.
Does compatibility change over time?
The basic structure of the two charts does not change, but the Major Cycles and annual luck change stage themes, so the same pair may find different aspects of the interaction emphasised at different times. Compatibility is not a one-time life sentence; the relationship itself is also changing.
How is this site's compatibility reading different from a human matchmaker?
Here an engine casts both charts first, then hands the cross-chart relationships to an AI reading; the process can be reviewed and the evidence questioned. A human matchmaker may add live observation and experience, but is also more dependent on personal state and school. Neither can guarantee how a relationship will end.
